Rising Star of 2020: Zac Mavin

Winner - Zac Mavin, Mistura Enterprise Ltd

A huge congratulations to Isaac (Zac) Mavin of Mistura Enterprise Ltd, who has been awarded the Intec Rising Star Award for 2020 for the enthusiasm and motivation he has shown during his Apprenticeship Programme.

Currently completing a Business Administrator Level 3 Apprenticeship with Intec, Zac has been instrumental in helping Mistura Enterprise win the North East Innovation of the Year Award. Zac has helped to develop a metal clip that can attach to an individual’s watch strap, holding medical details that can be scanned by a paramedic in case of an emergency.

‘Before my Apprenticeship I worked successfully full time as a chef for 7 years in restaurants across the North East. Due to a decline in my health, I could no longer perform the 12+ hour shifts.’

Zac faced the daunting task of changing careers. He made the jump to Mistura Enterprise – a family run IT Company delivering online health information systems.

Initially only taking on a part-time role, Zac’s manager, Lisa Armstrong was impressed with his attitude and dedication and a full time Apprenticeship position was created for him. ‘At first Zac lacked confidence in the healthcare sector. He approached the challenging environment and difficult customer base in a very positive and constructive way, asking for feedback then responding pragmatically to any comments.’

His Assessor Sally Furnish who nominated him, has enjoyed watching him excel in his new role: ‘Zac has taken on a lot of responsibility and is driving the company in the use of IT, even supporting and coaching the directors in various packages such as Moodle, Quick Books and Sage.’

‘Working for a family run business, being supported and put through an apprenticeship to further my career has given me a new lease of life. I have developed my people skills and got past the fear of introducing myself – I am now able to promote the company’s products and services to potential investors.’

‘The difference between studying at a traditional college compared to my Apprenticeship at Intec has been astounding. When I was at college I couldn’t work due the amount of travelling I had to do to and from college and a difficult timetable. With Intec I have been able to work full-time:

further my education and gain a qualification, whilst earning a living and providing for my family.’

Zac has exceeded all expectations throughout his time at Mistura, impressing both his employer and his assessor and taking ownership of his role to drive the business forward. Congratulations Zac!
