Rugby Football League tackles training with NVQs

The Rugby Football League, who manage, develop and promote Rugby League providing excellent high quality services for the whole of the profession, has recently introduced a qualification route for their staff. The RFL is working alongside Intec Business Colleges plc to deliver a range of NVQs & Apprenticeships to their staff at the Leeds Headquarters, with a view to rolling out to other regional areas.

Over the last two years the number of staff working for the RFL has increased significantly and as an organisation they are keen to provide a way for staff to develop. One option was to provide a qualification route for experienced staff and the NVQ was the most appropriate.

Staff are currently undertaking NVQs in Business Administration Level 2 and 3 as well as Customer Service Level 2 and Team Leading Level 2. Feedback is already very positive and staff feel they are developing their skills and are enjoying working with the tutors. The material is of high quality and the tutors are knowledgeable and flexible in their timing and delivery.

“We chose to work with Intec because they offered the full range of qualifications, they were very customer focussed and provided access to funding options,” explained John Hickson, Workforce Development Manager at Rugby Football League. “More importantly being a national organisation working with Intec will allow us to offer qualifications to the RFL regional areas as well as the Leeds HQ. I wanted a sound reliable organisation and after researching Intec I decided they would be highly dependable and as such felt confident to sign our staff up.”

The RFL is an organisation that believes in developing people, from elite athletes through to professional staff. They have a competency framework which includes “developing self & developing others” and offering qualifications helps support this framework and turns it from a “document” to a practicable demonstration of how the organisation and the staff members can engage in the full development cycle.

“The RFL will benefit from the NVQ training as it means we can offer all staff, in all parts of their work life cycle, from induction through to career development, training and qualifications,” explained John. “We are aiming to be an employer of choice and development with quality training, qualifications and development opportunities, this will aid our objective.”
